What is a Herniated Disc?

An intervertebral disc is the spongy shock absorbing tissue between the bones in your spine.

What is commonly known as a 'slipped disc' is more accurately described as a herniated or prolapsed disc, when the central tissue for the disc (the nucleus) breaks through the outer casing of the disc (the annulus) causing herniation.

This can cause the following symptoms:

  • Back Pain or neck pain
  • Sciatica or arm pain
  • Tingling, pins and needles or numbness
  • Difficulty walking, sitting and/or sleeping.

What Causes a Herniated or Prolapsed Disc?

Degeneration

Degeneration or wear and tear can happen in the spine as we get older, particularly in people with manual jobs. This causes the discs in our spine to thin and dehydrate, making them more vulnerable to injury from normal everyday movements, bending or lifting.

Trauma

Injury to a disc in the spine is often caused by trauma, commonly in the form of heavy lifting. The force of lifting a heavy object can cause damage to the outer casing of the disc, resulting in a sudden shape change, also known as a bulging or slipped disc.

Genetics

There is some evidence to suggest that you can inherit a predisposition to develop back pain. You may be more likely to suffer a disc injury if your parents or siblings have also experienced a disc injury.

Need Something More For Your Pain?

You should consider IDD Therapy if:

  • You have ongoing or chronic neck pain, back pain or sciatica associated with Spinal Stenosis.
  • You have been diagnosed with a slipped, prolapsed or herniated disc that is stopping you from living your life.
  • You have been diagnosed with spinal stenosis and told that nothing can be done about it.
  • You are keen to avoid invasive spinal injections or surgery.
  • You are tired of the merry-go-round of NHS appointments, painkillers and waiting times.

So, what is IDD Therapy?

The video below will explain how IDD Therapy, a safe and gentle approach to back and neck pain, has helped 1000s of people in the UK break free from a cycle of painkillers and get back to normal life.

A Safe and Trusted Approach to Degenerative disc disease, Spinal Stenosis and Back Pain

Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (IDD) Therapy is a successful and trusted non surgical spinal decompression treatment for back pain, neck pain and related problems such as sciatica.

It is particularly useful to sufferers of:

  • Bulging, herniated and degenerative discs.
  • Spinal Stenosis.
  • Sciatica or trapped nerves.
  • Pain that hasn't improved with other approaches such as spinal injections.
  • Cases of chronic pain ongoing for more that 6 weeks.

How Does IDD Therapy Work?

Everyday at BodyCare Sports Injury Clinic, Newmarket, we treat patients just like you with our IDD Therapy Programme.

Step 1 - Targeted Treatment

Idd Therapy targets the specific area of your spine that is causing the pain using our highly accurate decompression technology.

The gentle decompression force is also a precisely calculated proportion of your body weight and is therefore specifically tailored to you.

Step 2 - Decompression

By decompressing (taking pressure off) a segment of your spine affected by stenosis and stretching the soft tissues, mobility in the spine can be improved.

This can relieve pain caused by muscle spasm, and alleviate nerve compression and irritation caused by herniated or prolapsed discs.

Step 3 - Restore Pain free Movement

Each session of decompression force is gently increased. This treatment progressively decompresses your spine allowing your range of movement to improve, so you can get back to doing the things you love without pain or restriction.

Is IDD Therapy Painful?

Patients do not typically feel any pain during treatment.  The treatment itself is actually quite gentle, it is not unusual for people to fall asleep during their decompression treatment.

The decompression pulling force used is set at a precise proportion of your body weight.  This means it is specific to you and therefore unlikely to cause any pain or discomfort.

The decompression forces used are built up slowly and gradually during the course of your treatment, depending on your history and how you are responding to treatment.

After your treatment, we apply a cold compress to the area, this helps to reduce any soreness after the treatment.  Some patients do report soreness similar to what you would expect after having hands on treatment, such as massage, but this generally gets less intense as the treatment course progresses.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Every case of back pain is different but typically takes place over a 6 to 8 week period.  This allows time for the body to adapt with the goal of gently improving and restoring normal spinal function.

The exact number of treatments required will depend on your specific condition and how your body responds to the decompression therapy.

While relief from pain can be experienced in the early stages of treatment, the body does not adjust over night, especially when chronic conditions may have built up over a long period of time.
